The fleshlight was designed by Steve Shubin, who in July 1998 granted a patent for his invention as "a device for discreet sperm collection" and is marketed by Interactive Life Forms. It is named for the meat-like material used in the inner sleeve, as well as the plastic case on the sleeve, which has been fashioned to look like a large flashlight.
The inner sleeve is available with a valve, anus, or perforation of the mouth, a variety of skin tones in the color as well as they look, and 48 different internal textures. In addition to their classic collections, Fleshlight has also launched 'Freak' and 'Alien' collections, creating fleshlights based on fantasy or sci-fi style designs that move away from the traditional pornographic models used. The Quickshot launch was released in 2019.
The Fleshlight Girls brand has masturbation sleeves made from the bodies of pornographic actresses. A device called FlashJack is a spinoff marketed to gay men. The Fleshjack Boys brand has masturbation sleeves and dildos made from the bodies of gay pornographic actors. In 2017, Fleshlight launched Flashlight, an interactive device capable of removing a fleshlight sleeve, from Dutch sex-tech maker KIIROO, to sync with adult entertainment or related female toys.
